How to Get a Marketing Job with No Experience

In today’s fast-paced advertising world, a job in marketing can include everything from content creation to social media marketing, and PR management. Marketing is one of the most popular career types in the modern world, and one of the most stable industries to explore. After all, companies will always want to hire people who can make them stand out from the competition.

What is a Marketing Job?

Marketers are experts responsible for improving the overall image, reputation, and awareness of a brand. As a marketer, you help to get the name and products of a company in front of the right people. Ultimately, the role of a marketer is to use various tactics to increase traffic to a company’s store or website, and eventually improve sales.

The exact nature of your marketing career will depend on a number of things. For instance, a marketing assistant job description might include things like:

  • Monitoring marketing trends
  • Checking campaign analytics
  • Creating content
  • Engaging in public relations
  • Search engine optimization

A marketing specialist job description, on the other hand, may focus on particular parts of marketing, such as:

  • Search engine optimization and marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • Email marketing

How to Get a Marketing Job without Experience

The good news for anyone interested in getting a marketing job, is there are countless ways to get started. You don’t necessarily need a degree or a specific set of qualifications. If you have a creative mindset and dedication to your role, you’re already on the right track.

Here are some quick tips to help you start your marketing career:

Step 1: Gain certification

While you don’t need a degree to become a marketing expert, more qualifications on your resume will help to make up for your lack of experience. Start by thinking about the area of marketing you want to most get involved with, then look for certifications which can enhance your applications.

For instance, if you’re going to be working in PPC and SEO marketing with the search engines, you might get certification from the Google Analytics Academy. If you want to specialize in social media marketing, you can look for qualifications with Facebook.

Step 2: Start reading

No matter what kind of marketing job you’re looking for, reading about marketing from news reporters and experts will help to make you more effective in your role. There are tons of fantastic resources out there to teach you about content marketing, SEO, and how to thrive on social media.

The more you read, the more you’ll learn about the specific talents and skills required to become an expert in your field. Remember, as the marketing industry continues to evolve, you’ll need to keep learning and reading new resources over time.

Step 3: Start practicing with a marketing part-time job

Reading is great, but you’ll need to start implementing the things you learn to really become a master in your marketing career. You can begin by building your own website and implementing the thing you learn about content marketing with a blog or designing a social media account where you can use your social marketing skills.

If possible, look into part-time jobs and volunteer positions you can take on alongside your current job to help you develop your experience.

The more roles you can take on, even if they’re not particularly well-paid at first, the more examples of your work you’ll have to show to potential employers in the future.

Step 4: Start networking

In a lot of career avenues – including marketing – it’s often who you know that matters just as much as “what you know”. With this in mind, start developing your network of connections as much as you can. You might start on social media, joining marketing groups and LinkedIn forums where you can connect with other people in your industry.

It’s also worth taking some time out to attend marketing events whenever you can, so you can create some face-to-face relationships too. The connections you make in the marketing world will help you to discover new jobs and opportunities.

Step 5: Keep working at it

The marketing landscape has a lot of opportunities to offer the right people. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to work hard to make your career a success. Like any other specialist job, you’ll need to keep working to improve your chances of success.

Keep learning whenever you can, and look for opportunities to develop your skills and connect with new people in your industry. Eventually, you’ll find that you no longer have to worry about lack of experience getting in the way of your career.
